When To Seek Out A Christian Marriage Counselor

Carter Mccoy

While a Christian marriage can be a great thing, these marriages do suffer from their own challenges. No two people will see eye-to-eye all the time, even if they share the same faith. Here are some situations where Christian marriage counseling is a good idea.

Conflicts of Faith

When your marriage is founded on sharing the same faith, and then you discover that one partner is reconsidering their faith or is not as strong in that faith, it can be a heartbreaking time. On one hand, you have agreed to stay by your partner's side, and on the other hand, you don't want to jeopardize your own faith.

A counselor can help you sort out the issues that come up with dealing with your own beliefs, and reconciling them with a partner who may see things somewhat differently. Hopefully, you can rework your vision of a good, Christian marriage.

Different Ideas on Gender Roles

The Bible's teachings have some specific ideas about gender roles. While Christians all read the same book, they may interpret the teachings differently; each person may see them as guidelines or as strict rules for living.

When you have different ideas on the roles that each spouse should take in the marriage, this can lead to recurring issues. A counselor can help to make sure that both partners' views are heard and help you come to some compromise.

Bad Behaviors in the Marriage

Sometimes a partner may develop a behavior that you don't approve of, such as an addiction to pornography or gambling, or a bad temper. Although it's important to love and accept your spouse, if the behavior deeply affects you, then it may be a good thing to work out in counseling. The benefit of seeing a Christian counselor is that the counselor will be able to help you talk through the faith-related foundations of your marriage and help each partner understand the other person through that lens. Through counseling, you may gain some new ideas on how to support your partner through their behavior until they can work on it.

Whether or not you choose to seek out marriage counseling, it's always a good exercise to discuss problems with your spouse and try to come up with solutions that make each person feel heard and valued in the marriage. Christian marriage counseling can be a wonderful tool for making your faith-based marriage even stronger.
